Encaustic play.........................

Untitled

Encaustic Mixed Media

I rewarded myself with some art time today. I took care of some household chores, got the crock pot going and cooked some turkey chili. I don't like cooking but decided to meet it head on and cook some things that can last awhile. Now; I don't have to think about that question that is put in front of me about this time every day.............."what's for dinner"? :)

So; once the chores were done, I felt more relaxed and decided to play with some encaustic wax. I don't have a lot of it;a friend of mine gave me a block of the clear encaustic and today seemed like a good day to try it. I used a small melting pot for the wax.

Nature is often an inspiration, for me, and that's where my muse seemed to be taking me. I was soon visualizing a landscape with the handmade papers I had laid out on the floor. I even incorporated a piece of my deli paper! Can you see it in there? :) I find the deli paper is really wonderful to adhere to canvas. It took the wax beautifully both underneath and on top. It also reacts nicely with all the gel mediums.

After my papers were all torn and arranged the way I liked, I used the wax to adhere and then applied a smooth layer of the encaustic wax over the whole canvas.

I guess I don't really know too much about encaustic wax vs beeswax but, frankly, I didn't notice much of a difference other than the color. I still am partial to the natural beeswax with the wonderful aroma and beautiful vintage color. I bought a new book, recently, on encaustic wax so I will learn a lot more about it in the future.

I hope you all are enjoying your weekend, so far, and taking some creative time for yourself.

Thinking of all of you! Love always - Marilyn xxoo

wONDERFUL WORK, mIS mARILYN!!!! I do so hate that question and I used to love to cook!! W e seem to be collecting food allergies of late and that make the decision process even more difficult!! SIGH!!! It could be so much worse , we are so lucky to ahve choices after all!! I too, love th Beeswax but I do think that the resin that is added to the wax to make it encaustic , can also be added to bees wax. You will probably find out in your new book!! What book is it by the way??
Hugs! keep warm!!

hahaha, why does it come we don´t love cooking? (me not either!) probably because it takes time away from making art;)?

i never tried out wax techniques so far, but your piece is a delight (and thus very tempting to dig into this, too)! love the earthy colors and the texture on it!

so far i spent the weekend mostly with rearranging my rubberstamps...
somehow i must master this chaos...

I love the encautic technique but it’s not one that I ever manage to do successfully:-)
But your result is fantastic, Marilyn.

I have NO idea how I missed this post yesterday, but I'm sure glad I looked on my blog today and saw the little picture pop up. Yep, I recognize the deli wrap. I figured it would take well to beeswax. I can't wait to use it in a collage in my altered book. You have totally inspired me to play with it some more. I'm even planning to make some beads using it. Before I forget, I love, love this nature inspired piece.

Wonderful canvas and encaustic creation Marilyn!
Makes me want to step into the lovely scene you've created!!!
We could hide there and wouldn't have to cook :)
The crockpot is a great way to go, I find "what" to cook the biggest hurdle ... you did good, VERY good all around!!!

I am behind on blog reading...had I read this before I saw you on Sunday I would have known that you had turkey chili, and also that you were working in encaustic... when I mentioned it on Sunday, I had no idea...it was just that weird wavelength that tethers us togethers lately!!! Love this piece. I love the landscape of papers.
